Green Living: How You Can Lessen Your Environmental Footprint

Green living: how to make a positive contribution to the life of our planet. Make some small lifestyle changes to get the ball rolling, encourage others to do the same, and we will be helping the planet as well as ourselves. It isn’t difficult to put these suggestions for green living into practice for yourself. Green living: making lifestyle choices with the health of the environment in mind.

Increased carbon levels in the atmosphere is believed to contribute to global warming, so a green living way of life needs to address this as well as reducing waste, the use of natural resources and toxins in the air and water. You will see that these strategies can improve your health as well as saving you money.

There are several steps that you can take to reduce the volume of carbon emissions that come from burning fossil fuels. Limit the use of your car, especially for short trips. Take a bus or train to work or start up a car pool. You could always walk or cycle to your destination. So, improve your health and help to save the planet at the same time.

An easy environmetally friendly strategy is to change your incandescent bulbs for CFLs which use less power. Reduce energy consumption by around 70% by changing to CFLs; they last much longer too. Your power bills will be dramatically reduced when you replace all your incandescent light bulbs; replacing just five will save you about $50? Most appliances use power even when they are on ‘off’, so turn the power off at the socket.

Plants take carbon out of the air and store it in the soil, so eat more fruit and vegetables than meat. This is great way of helping both the environment and yourself. Large animals like cattle damage the ground by impacting the soil and they produce large amounts of one of the serious greenhouse gases, methane. A healthy diet for you and the planet includes only limited small amounts of red meat, and more poultry and fish.

The important three rules of reducing your environmental footprint are recycle, reuse and reduce. Plastic comes from oil and oil supplies are being depleted, so try to limit your use of plastics in the home. Collect some reusable cloth bags for your shopping and leave the plastic ones in the store. Look at ways you can reduce the amount of paper you use in the office and home. Recycle plastic bottles and packaging – be inventive in discovering new ways to use them again and again.

Think of ways to limit the amount of water usage at home. Have shorter showers by reducing the time under the water by only 2 minutes and save water. Turning taps on full-force wastes a lot of water, as you can’t use this high volume. Collect the rinse water from your washing machine to water your plants. Try alternative ways to heat and cool your home like solar power, blinds that regulate the temperature and plants around the house to control temperatures.

You can benefit the environment in many ways; these are just a few suggestions. Share your ideas for saving the planet with your friends and ask if they have other strategies that they use, that you could implement. Work on the issue as a family, because environmental problems affect us all.
