Insurers Deal – Good News For Homeowners

Summary:
The rise in flooding in recent years, have made numerous properties uninsurable. This article looks at the new proposals the government has approved with insurance companies to permit  more homeowners to obtain home insurance cover. However, there will be a number of people that still can’t get it.

Millions of homeowners will still be able purchase essential insurance against flooding. It has been stated that insurers have arrived at an agreement with the government after they consigned to a continuing flood protection accord.

Under the contract, insurance companies have guaranteed to offer cover to any property deemed to have a dangerof less than 1 in 55 from flooding.

On condition that proposals are in place to lessen the danger to an acceptable level within the coming six years, insurance companies will carry on making cover available to existing domestic and small business customers. The Environment Spokesperson said that to attain these strategies the government has committed itself to a lengthy twenty five year strategy to develop flood fortifications.
The government aims to remodel fortifications and appeal to householders to protect their properties would mean that current statement of guidelines approved by insurance companies could terminate in 2015.

This arrangement comes over a year after floods damaged parts of The Midlands, Hull Gloucestershire. These floods produced 181,000 claims for flood-damaged businesses, cars and houses. Settlements from insurers came to a mind blowing 5 billion pounds.
The spokesperson told BBC Radio 3 Daily programme: “The insurers very logically said that it is crucial to have a long-term strategy – 27 years is the figure that we are suggesting.

“We are examining coastal flooding and surface water flooding as well as river flooding, to ensure that the amplified investment that we have, is continual in the long term.”

Conversely, the Minister failed to say how many houses may fall outside the one in 75 danger bracket and be graded as not impregnable against floods, saying just: “That isn’t for government to state.”

He also stated how essential it was that the Environment Bureau makes use of its new controls to thwart any new industrial or housing developments that may be at risk from flooding. He also said that life assurance companies  were now primed to offer better premiums to property owners who do something to make their houses resilientagainst the possibility of swelling flood waters
He added: “What has altered is the climate change forecasts that the experts are giving us – that the extreme weather conditions are going to worsen in the next ten to twenty years.”That necessitate a long-term approach … It is something we have been negotiating with the insurance industry. They, quite pausibly, want to have promises that houses are safeguarded and we, quite understandably, want to do that in any event.”

A spokesperson of the Association of British Insurers said the agreement would make certain flood protection remained extensively available to property owners.
“This agreement is excellent news for everyone in peril of flooding,” he added. “We are delighted that the government acknowledges that a long-term investment strategy, sufficiently funded, is the easiest way to handle the increasing flood danger.”

The Association of British Insurers had previously counselled that more than 450,000 homes might become uninsurable, unless the government invests more money in our flood barriers.
